MYHEALTH CLINIC GUIDE: Proctosigmoidoscopy

Before the Procedure
  • Detailed, written instructions on how to prepare for the proctosigmoidoscopy will be given when the examination is scheduled.
  • A complete cleansing of the lower colon is required through one or two enemas the night before the proctosigmoidoscopy. A liquid diet may also be required to ensure a clear and complete view of the colon.
  • Inform your MyHealth Clinic doctor of any medications taken connected to the reason for the proctosigmoidoscopy, as he/she may see some reason to require you to stop taking them prior to the procedure. Inform your MyHealth Clinic doctor of any allergies to medications, additional medications, or any medical condition they need to know to ensure a successful and safe procedure.
  • A consent form will be given for you to sign. This signifies that you, as a patient, understand the risk involved in the procedure, as well as the benefits and possible alternatives to it. This will also confirm your permission to go ahead with the procedure. The consent form must be signed for the procedure to push through. Talk to your MyHealth Clinic doctor for any concerns regarding the proctosigmoidoscopy.
Results An initial report will be given by your MyHealth Clinic doctor once the scope is removed. Depending on his/her findings, you may be given a clean bill of health, or requested to undergo other tests. If a biopsy is done, the results of the histology will be ready after several weeks. Should you have questions or clarifications about the results of your gastroscopy, please don’t hesitate to discuss it with your MyHealth Clinic doctor.
